Interview with B. F. Warden, Jr. concerning his experiences as owner and operator of B. F. Warden Grocery Store in Bertram, Texas. Warden discusses his family background, his work on the family farm in Bertram, his educational experiences in Bertram schools, his employment as a teller in A. B. McGill's bank and D. C. Reed's bank in Bertram, D. C. Reed's business activities, and his employment as a cashier with Briggs State Bank in Burnet County. He also talks about charging exchange on checks, his entry into the grocery business in Marble Falls in 1924, the store inventory, the move of the business to Bertram in 1925, the effects of the addition of refrigeration in 1926, the construction of a new store in 1935, and the effects of the Depression in Bertram. Warden describes the prices of grocery items during World War II, the cash versus credit business, the demise of grocery wholesalers in Austin, the computerization of business competitors, and his civic activities.
